Though San Antonio no doubt prides itself upon being one of the greatest cities in the country, if not the world, we recognize that Texas has an unlimited amount to offer. Don't have much time? That's okay, this short day trip to Austin can fulfill needs for the whole family.
1. Chinese New Year: The year of the Goat is upon us, and trust me, Austin takes the Chinese New Year very seriously. There are celebrations happening all week, though one of the most entertaining are the all day events happening at the Austin Chinatown. Opening ceremony begins at 10am, with martial art performances, dragon dances, and the like. After you have finished enjoying the festivities, stop by any one of the numerous Asian cafes and enjoy a refreshing bubble tea.
2. Taco deli: Austin by all means has a lot to offer when it comes to food, though they are highly known for their food trucks. Taco deli is a food truck no more, though you can see the original truck parked outside of it's small location on Lamar Blvd. I must say the Tacoloco ranks supreme: Adobo braised brisket with caramelized onions. Order at the counter and wait a short while on the patio where the kids are free to enjoy the fresh air. My five year old had absolutely no complaints about their quesadilla and craft ginger soda.
3. Jester king Brewery: Though this may seem like an adult outing, kids are not only welcome at this gorgeous farmhouse brewery, located in the hill country (literally on a farm) about twenty minutes outside of Austin, but they too will fall in love with it. Jesterking has made a name for serving world class European beers, especially sours. When my son and I visit, Mom is allowed to enjoy a beer while the son plays horseshoes in the open area.
